Squirrels

This is a new section of the Scout movement (introduced in 2021) and provides a basis for fun and friendship for 4 to 6 year olds. They enjoy all that Scouting has to offer; being introduced to outdoor activities, games, exploring nature, visits and residential experiences with a focus on children “having outdoor adventures, making friends and learning”.

Squirrels meet as Dreys

There is core flexibility in the age range: young people can join from age 4, and generally move to Beavers once they turn 6.

We currently have one Squirrel Drey:

  • Willows: Wednesdays (4:45-5:45pm)

Activities

During their time in the Drey, Squirrel Scouts will get a chance to try a wide range of different activities at the HQ as well as out and about in the local area. They may also have an introduction to camping. Participation, rather than meeting set standards, is the key approach, and there are a range of badges and challenge awards that Beaver Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements.

The Squirrel Scout Promise

There are a number of variations of the Squirrel Scout Promise to reflect the range of faiths, beliefs and attitudes, and nationalities, in the UK within Scouting.

I promise to do my best
To be kind and helpful
And to love God | And to love our world

The Squirrel Scout Motto

Be prepared

Uniform

Red Squirrel sweatshirt and group t-shirt (green).

We recommend that they wear long trousers (jeans or combat trousers) and trainers. Initially they should wear a t-shirt or sweatshirt as appropriate to the weather, but after investiture should wear the uniform top and scarf.

Communications

We operate a closed Facebook group for Squirrels
